An Introduction to the categories of Composite decking |
|
14 Aug 2017 | Composite decking, in its most simple form, consists of a combination of powdered wood and plastic. These are melted down and then fused together in order to produce decking that will last considerably longer than its wood alternative .
The main difference between the categories of composite decking is how solid the composite structure between the outer surfaces is. In terms of the specifics, there are three main types that we can look at
Structured or sometimes referred to as Hollow
Hollow decking is the most structured basic type of composite, and has a lattice structure within the cross section of the board itself. Between the surfaces of the boards, there is a hollow centre. This therefore reinforces the board and prevents cracks and bending
It can be seen as the basis for all the board types.
This type of decking is ideal for those customers who want to keep a little more money in their pocket while retaining some flexibility, and is still as durable as the other types. It is, however, critical that a good warranty is present when buying this type luckily, we offer a Min 10 year warranty on all our boards.
The cost is typically very good value between £30 to £45 per square metre, but do contact us for a bespoke quote for your exact requirements.
Solid
The surface of this board is similar to the structured boards described above, meaning that this is a good choice for decking with a lot of footfall.
The main difference here is that, when looking at a cross section of the board, it is not hollow but instead being solid, and therefore, perhaps more hard wearing. Obviously more material as been used and are more expensive than hollow.
The cost is a good mid-ranged option £40 to £ 60 per square metre, contact us for a quote but there can be variations in durability, especially when dealing with larger surface areas.
Capped
The capped composite decking board is our highest priced option £50 to £90 per square metre, mainly due to its additional outer layer on the top of the composite itself this reinforces the structure even further. This outer layer Allows us to vary the appearance and include patterns which are so realistic to the wooden counterparts
This composite is durable, low maintenance and provides an aesthetically pleasing finish. Capped is long lasting and resistant to all forms of decay or rot. It is an excellent alternative to wood and plastic decking, and has no risk of splintering, warping or rotting. Staining, sealing or painting is also not required.
It is perhaps the most aesthetically pleasing of the three categories, and it quite minimalist in design. Due to the higher proportion of plastic and the additional processes, this board is considerably more hard wearing and long lasting than hollow or solid. These boards are specifically made with aesthetics and durability in mind, but do come at a cost.
Hopefully, this article has gone some way to demystifying the world of composite decking. Even if you have not yet made your mind up, you should hopefully be some way to doing so. Any one of these types of board will be a longer term investment, with higher yields of results than traditional wood based decking.
